Geologic Illustration

1 Credit Hour

2nd Block Class

(Feb 28th - Apr 14th)

1 hr lecture and 2 hrs lab per week

Instructors: J. D. Keith, K. Thompson, and other Geology Faculty Members

 

Objectives: To teach students how to design and create publishable geologic illustrations. Standard tools to be introduced and used will be Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat and HTML. The primary assignments to be completed will be illustrations needed in other Geology courses this semester or thesis illustrations. [Alternative assignments (such as generic index maps, simplified geologic maps, cross sections, etc) will be provided to students if needed.] Downloading web resources, scanning, redrawing illustrations, overlaying, and uploading illustrations and photos to the web will be covered. There will be a number of guest and faculty lecturers as well as student presentations. Students will upload their maps and illustrations to the department web server to produce online portfolios (suitable to show prospective employers). Grading will be based largely (80%) on the web-based portfolio of each student.

 

Prerequisites: Geology 351 or Geology 230

Field Trips: One half-day trip (teaching photography).

FINAL EXAM; 7 AM - 10 AM

COMPREHENSIVE

 

This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. The minimum requirements for a passing grade are:

1.        Attend class (only two absences are allowed without permission of the instructor).

2.        Create a web page with personal resume and portfolio of work. [This portfolio would consist of all illustrations made for this class or illustrations made for other classes as well.]

3.        Pass the Final Exam (score above 60%) which will consist of an exercise using PhotoShop and an exercise using Illustrator that requires use of the basic tolls and skills.
