This is a tectonically complex area. In fact, there is little agreement between researchers as to the types and locations of the faults between the toe of the main peninsula and the northern portion of the island of Sicily. The African Plate is colliding with the Eurasian Plate, while back-arc extension is causing normal faulting along the tow of the boot and between the main peninsula and Sicily. |
